Where wood rot shows up

Rot is a fungus — it eats wood once the wood stays wet. In our New Jersey winters, water finds every weak spot and freeze-thaw pries it open. These are the ones we get called for most:

Decks & porches

Soft boards, rotted joists, post bottoms, ledgers pulling off the house, and stair stringers gone punky underneath.

Fascia & soffits

The trim boards behind your gutters — first to go when gutters overflow, and the classic "paint won't stick anymore" spot.

Exterior trim & siding

Corner boards, window and door casing, water table and band board that stayed wet one winter too many.

Columns, sills & thresholds

Porch columns soft at the base, rotted window sills, and door thresholds where water pools and won't drain.

We don't just patch it — we stop it

Anybody can slap a new board over rot and hand you the same problem next year. We cut back to solid, dry wood, fix whatever let the water in, and rebuild it right. And where a spot keeps rotting, we rebuild it in PVC or composite — no wood fiber for fungus to eat, so it never rots, warps, or needs repainting.

Real job, Tenafly: a custom arched walkway on a rooftop deck was a beautiful piece of carpentry — until the wood underneath rotted right through. We rebuilt the whole arch in PVC: same curve, same clean lines, but this one won't rot, ever. We didn't just fix it — we made sure it never happens again.

Repair or replace? We tell you straight

Contained, surface rot gets cut out and pieced in — the affordable fix. But a rotted ledger, post, joist or column is structural: it's holding weight, so it gets replaced, not patched. We do both repair and full rebuilds — and we run our own demo & removal crew — so there's no incentive to talk you into a bigger job than you need. Not sure which you've got? Here's how to tell whether a deck is worth repairing or replacing.

How it works

1. Text photos

Send 3–5 photos of the rot to (201) 245-3443. Ballpark back the same day — free, no site visit needed.

2. We assess it

We tell you honestly: patch, piece-in, or replace the member — and whether PVC is worth it there.

3. Cut out & rebuild

Rot cut back to solid wood, cause fixed, rebuilt clean. Dust controlled, debris hauled, swept when we leave.

Rot repair questions, straight answers

What causes wood rot on a deck or house?

Rot is a fungus that eats wood once it stays wet. In NJ it starts where water sits or drains badly — deck ledgers and post bottoms, fascia and soffits, window sills, door thresholds and porch columns. Failed paint or sealer and years of freeze-thaw let moisture in, and once the wood turns soft and spongy it spreads to whatever it touches.

Can rotted wood be repaired, or does it all need replacing?

Depends how far it's spread. Surface or contained rot gets cut back to solid wood and pieced in. But a rotted deck ledger, post, joist or column is structural — that member gets replaced, not patched, because it's holding weight. Text photos to (201) 245-3443 and we'll tell you honestly which one you're looking at.

What is PVC or composite, and why does it stop rot for good?

PVC and composite have no organic wood fiber for fungus to eat, so they don't rot, warp or need repainting. On a rooftop deck in Tenafly we rebuilt a rotted custom arched walkway entirely in PVC — same curve and clean lines, but that one will never rot again. Where a spot keeps rotting, rebuilding it in PVC ends the cycle.

How much does wood rot repair cost?

It ranges widely — a few rotted fascia boards is a small job; rotted deck framing, posts or a porch floor is bigger because it's structural. There's no honest flat price sight-unseen. Text 3–5 photos of the rot to (201) 245-3443 and you'll get a free ballpark the same day.

Is rotted wood on a deck or porch dangerous?

It can be. Rotted deck posts, joists, stairs or railings lose their strength and are a real fall risk with people on them. If a board feels spongy, a post wiggles, or a screwdriver pushes into the wood, get it looked at before you use it. Send photos and we'll tell you whether it's urgent.
